Many have forgotten that the war in Ukraine is not the first in Europe since World War II. After the break-up of Yugoslavia, the fighting was very close to us – in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and finally in Kosovo and Serbia. Of all these wars, the bloodiest was the Bosnian war. Part of it was the siege of Sarajevo. In 1994, together with cameraman Hristo Obreshkov, the prominent Bulgarian journalist Boyko Vassilev entered the besieged Sarajevo for the first time. The war has been going on for the second year, almost as much. Sarajevo is surrounded. The Bosnian Serb army shelled the town from the surrounding mountain slopes. In three years, ten months and three weeks of siege, 1,601 children were killed, 200 of them by sniper fire. There was not enough food, there was no electricity and water, the citizens were cutting down the trees for firewood. The only way to overcome the siege is to go through a tunnel dug in the ground.

BОYKO VASSILEV is a prominent Bulgarian journalist, a producer and a presenter of the weekly TV show Panorama that airs on Bulgarian National Television. Author of numerous journalistic articles, essays and documentaries.
