RIFE’s fifth edition will take place in Smolyan, Bulgaria from 10 to 13 July 2025.
The International Documentary Rhodope Film Fest (RIFE) revives the tradition of one of Bulgaria’s most iconic past film events: The Forum “An Overview of the Creativity of Young Filmmakers”, held from 1978 to 1991. Building on this free, creative spirit, the festival now aims to establish itself as an active platform that brings together different generations of documentary filmmakers from around the world.
The theme of the 5th edition, ‘Food’, is explored from various angles and perspectives, from the conditions required for its cultivation to the ways in which it is consumed. As well as this focus, viewers will be able to enjoy a variety of films of different lengths and themes: short, medium and feature-length films organised into several programmes. We have selected some of the best premieres of the year. Our programme also includes exciting events such as virtual reality experiences and live music performances.

The screenings this year are again in the familiar locations. The Regional Library “Nikolay Vranchev” with its amphitheatrical area in front will provide an opportunity for exciting cinema experiences under the open sky, and the artistic atmosphere of the Rhodope Drama Theatre “Nikolay Haytov” will become a center for professional and informal talks, workshops and discussions, a kind of festival center for meetings of authors, critics and the audience.
